John Owens was born 25 January, 1942 in Wirral, Merseyside. He is an English actor who appeared in Coronation Street as building society manager Mr Irwin in 1977 who refused Mavis Riley an individual mortgage application. He returned to the programme in 2009 as Gilbert, who briefly dated Pam Hobsworth after the pair met at a singles night.

He also appeared in an episode of Pardon the Expression (The Take-over Bid) in 1966.

With an acting CV dating back to the mid-1960s, some of his other credits include roles in St. Ives, The White Rabbit, Hadleigh, Doctor Who, Please Sir!, Z Cars, Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads?, Shades of Greene, Shoestring, The Professionals, One by One, Open All Hours, Lovejoy, The Bill, Doctors, Nighty Night and Elementary.

On film he has appeared in Joanna, Oh! What a Lovely War, Scrooge, An American Werewolf in London, Rhinestone, From Hell, War, Shanghai Knights and The Wolfman.
