As one of the graduate entrants to the job, PC Gary McCann was what Brownlow, his boss, described as ‘highly promising’. Thirty-year-old McCann had gained a degree in Politics and History at the University of East Anglia before his arrival at the nick. Certainly the young Londoner, whose parents came to England from the West Indies back in the 1960s, had read all the books and thought he had policing sussed. His attitudes were right for the times. But, conscientious though he was, he quickly found that you couldn't always work by the book. One those occasions the confident style masked knots of worry. However, he soon rejected academia in favour of a police career, keen to see action rather than indulge in theory.

McCann did his probation with A relief, puppy-trained by Sergeant Boyden. He loved the physical side of the job and the authority the uniform brought him. Gary quickly proved himself part of the team and also showed a high level of tact and diplomacy when dealing with members of the community. He was always immaculately turned out, and because he felt accountable to the black community, he believed in the need to set an example both to the public and to his fellow officers. His colleagues found him reliable – something he wouldn’t say about Pearce, a detective he’d call dodgy. Smithy's attitudes didn't always go down too well with him either. Others he found a touch old-fashioned. But on the whole he was prepared to be tolerant.

Sometimes intolerant of sloppiness in others, he had an arrogant streak that manifested itself when June Ackland gained promotion at his expense. Gary was keen to re-apply 4 years later, when he received his elevation to sergeant and transferred away from Sun Hill.
